Verity Lane Market is a chef‑driven food hall and hospitality precinct that brings new civic energy to the heritage‑listed Sydney Building. Once a series of separately developed blocks with an overlooked service lane behind them, the rear half of the building has been completely rebuilt across four original blocks to create a new frontage to Verity Lane and open connections from Northbourne Avenue. Large glazed openings, outdoor dining and articulated brick façades establish the lane as a primary address, while expressed structure and honest materials reference the building’s layered history in a way that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its past.
Inside, the food hall is shaped by a series of small‑format tenancies, each conceived as an open display kitchen to create the buzz of a bustling market. The original heritage fabric has been stripped back to reveal the building’s raw structure, and new elements are layered in with restraint, recalling different eras of the Sydney Building’s history through a contemporary lens. A consistent shopfront language brings coherence to the precinct, while flexible landlord kitchen fit‑outs support rotating vendors, pop‑ups and residencies. The result is a lively, chef‑driven setting that feels both grounded in the past and designed for the evolving culture of Canberra’s city centre.

Throughout the precinct, thoughtful touches draw visitors into the building’s layered history. Lighting with vintage cues softens the raw materials, while the long timber‑panelled bar with its white granite top and bronzed mirror shelving evokes the understated refinement of 1920s cocktail bars. Custom concrete trough sinks and bathrooms inspired by London’s early underground stations continue the theme, recalling the building’s many eras while supporting high‑capacity service. Designed for both everyday dining and the energy of festivals, performances and community events, Verity Lane Market offers a welcoming civic space where people can gather, linger and return as the city around it continues to grow.
Adaptive reuse was central to the project, with sustainability achieved by retaining the Sydney Building’s structure, revealing rather than replacing materials, and upgrading key elements to improve long‑term comfort and performance. Existing steel and brick were exposed and re‑used, and thermal efficiency was significantly improved through targeted building upgrades.
The material palette is curated to celebrate the building’s heritage while supporting a lively, durable food hall environment. Exposed structure becomes a defining feature, with raw brickwork, expressed steelwork and continuous honed concrete floors creating a cohesive backdrop for the evolving tenancy mix.
